Pico de Orizaba: What You Need to Know Before Climbing Mexico’s Highest Volcano

Ready to conquer the highest peak in Mexico?

Pico de Orizaba, also known as Citlaltépetl, is no ordinary mountain.
At 5,636 meters (18,491 ft), it’s the highest point in Mexico and the third highest volcano in North America.
Yes — you can climb it with the right training, acclimatization, and guidance.

This article is for you if:
- You're thinking about climbing Pico de Orizaba for the first time
- You don't know where to start or what it involves
- You want to prepare physically and mentally for this challenge

Why climb Pico de Orizaba?

- It’s the higest volcano in North America, part of the 7 volcano summits
- Reaching the summit is a life-changing achievement
- The views are as epic as the challenge itself
- It’s the perfect next step after Iztaccíhuatl, La Malinche, or Nevado de Toluca

Many of our hikers say that watching the sunrise from the glacier is one of the most beautiful experiences they’ve ever had.

Can I climb it with no experience?

Pico de Orizaba is not recommended for complete beginners.
You don’t need to be a professional mountaineer, but you do need solid preparation.

You’ll need:
- Prior training at altitude (ideally between 3,000 and 4,000 meters)
- A gradual acclimatization plan (climb La Malinche or Iztaccíhuatl first)
- Comfort hiking with a backpack in cold conditions
- To climb with professional guides, proper gear, and solid logistics

What is the climb like?

- Typically done in 2 days
- Day 1: Drive to base camp (Piedra Grande) and sleep there
- Day 2: Summit push starts early (around 1–2 AM)
- Trail includes volcanic sand, followed by the Jamapa Glacier
- It’s physically demanding, but doesn’t require technical climbing — it’s a high-altitude hike using crampons and ice axe

What gear do I need?

Technical gear (usually provided by your tour):
- Crampons
- Ice axe
- Helmet
- Harness
- Headlamp

Personal items:
- 25–35L daypack

- Mountaineering boots
- Layered clothing and thermal gear
- Waterproof gloves
- Warm hat or balaclava
- Glacier sunglasses
- Sunscreen, snacks, water

At México Travesías, we provide all the technical gear and guide you in what to bring before your trip.

What kind of tour should I book?

Look for a tour that includes:
- Transportation from Mexico City or Puebla
- Professional high-altitude mountain guides
- Accident insurance
- Full technical equipment
- Meals and hydration
- Base camp setup in shelter or with tent and sleeping gear (if needed)
- A pace adapted to your level, with safety and acclimatization as a priority
